- Top 5 things to do in the Westfjords
The Westjords has many wonders awaiting to be discovered by travelers. That is why The Lonely Planet travel guide has recognized the Westfjord’s uniqueness and listed the region No. 1 on the list for Best in Travel in 2022.
This is what they said about it: “The Westfjords is where Iceland’s dramatic landscapes come to a riveting climax and where mass tourism disappears – only about 10% of Iceland’s visitors ever see the region.”
The Westfjords are one of the most beautiful and untouched regions in Iceland. With its dramatic landscapes, pristine nature and abundant wildlife, the Westfjords offer something for everyone. If you’re planning a trip to this stunning region, be sure to add these five activities to your itinerary. From hiking and whale watching to hot springs and bird Watching, the Westfjords has it all!
The Latrabjarg Cliffs are located on the southwest side of the Westfjords and are home to the puffins. They are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Westfjords. The cliffs are in the northwest of the peninsula and offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can also see a variety of birds, including puffins, northern gannets, guillemots, razorbills and others (As a matter of fact, Látrabjarg is one of Europe’s biggest sea-bird cliffs and home to over a million seabirds).
One of the most unique and beautiful beaches in Iceland can be found in the Westfjords. Its name is Rauðisandur, also known as Red Sand Beach is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. The beach gets its name from the red cliffs that surround it. These cliffs are made of lava that has been weathered over time and turned red. The beach itself is covered in black sand, which makes for a stunning contrast.
There are many things to do at Red Sand Beach. Swimming is one of the most popular activities, as the water is said to have healing properties. But please keep in mind this water is extremely cold. Visitors can also sunbathe, go for a walk, or simply take in the incredible views.
Dynjandi is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland and is a must-see for any traveler to the Westfjords. The waterfall is located in the town of Arnarfjörður and can be reached by a short hike from the parking lot. From the top of the falls, you can see an amazing view of the fjord below.
The Westfjords are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Iceland, and the Northern Lights are one of the most popular reasons to visit this region. The best time to see the Northern Lights is from late September to early April, when the nights are long and dark. There are many ways to experience the Northern Lights in the Westfjords, including camping, driving, or even taking a boat ride to see how majestic these lights are.
Hotsprings are a dime a dozen in the Westfjords. There are so many of them, and they are all so different, that it’s hard to choose just one (or two, or three) to visit. But we’ve compiled a list of our favorites, to help you make your decision.
As you can see, there is no shortage of things to do in The Westfjords. No wonder why many different traveler guides frequently designate the Westfjords as a destination of excellence for any serious traveler. Whether you are here to see the subarctic flora of Iceland or explore the fascinating fauna in its natural habitat. Rest assured, you will have the time of your life here.
