Visit Latrabjarg, Europe’s largest and western most Sea-Bird Cliffs, an amazing bird and nature experience. Walk along the top of the magnificent Latrabjarg cliffs and enjoy the view of the tens of thousands of sea birds covering the cliffs. In the breeding season, Latrabjarg hosts a total of million pairs of seabirds such as Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots (Murres) and various gulls. The adorable orange-beaked Puffins are typically the star attraction.
In Latrabjarg, the puffins are comfortable around the humans who brave the fierce winds that tear through the air. You will typically find them peeping out from the grass that coats the top parts of the cliffs near the lighthouse and the car parking area.
Are you ready for a sight you will never forget?
Seeing the puffins and the other seabirds in their natural breeding habitat at the Latrabjarg Cliffs is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The cliffs, offer excellent viewing and photographic opportunities of all the cliffs’ sea bird species within an easy reach, about 30-500 meters from the car parking area. In addition, the cliffs offer you an exhilarating hike that you can adjust to your own walking distance of choice and walking capabilities. The cliffs are 14KM long and gradually increase in height from 50-60 meters near the parking area and the lighthouse to the highest point of about 440 meters.
As the cliffs get higher, Latrabjarg is a thrilling hike that will get your heart pumping. We advise your utmost caution near the edge of the cliff as peeking down from high altitude is not for the faint of heart. We urge you to follow the safety guidance provided on signs near the car parking area. There you can also read and learn a bit about the heroic rescue that took place here in 1947 when local farmers had to descend the cliffs to rescue the crew from a British trawler that was stranded under the Latrabjarg cliffs in the middle of winter.
Hotel Latrabjarg is situated in a fantastic location on the south side of Patreksfjörður and only 23 km close to the bird cliffs. Make your reservation now as availability runs low or non-existent in summer
Although Latrabjarg is very beautiful during winter, summer months are better to see the Puffin, as the bulk of the Puffins stay in the cliffs from Mid May to Mid August.
The same things you would need to go birdwatching in any other country! Just make sure to pack some comfortable boots and winter-gear, as the top of the cliffs can get pretty windy.
Yes! We actually think this is the best way to travel around the beautiful Icelandic landscapes.

If you wish to visit during the warmest season, then summer (June, July and August) is your best option. During this time you can also find seasonal birds like the Puffins in the Latrabjarg cliffs. If you want to experience a magical side of Iceland, filled with Northern lights, then winter (September to February) is the best choice. Every season here is full of wonder and each has its own charm that will take your breath away.
As of the beginning of 2023, there is no Uber service in Iceland. This being a big island with widely spread cities, it is recommended to rent a car while you visit. If you do not feel like driving, there are other means of transportation available, such as taxis, buses and tours. In Reykjavik you can also find electric scooters from Hopp or Zolo.
