Getting to our hotel is a beautiful journey filled with incredible sights.
We highly recommend a self drive:
The Flight
Most visitors to Iceland come with an international flight arriving at the international Keflavik airport (KEF) which is about 45 minutes drive away from Reykjavik, the Capital City of Iceland.
Renting a Car
You can rent a car in advance by Hertz to pick it up at Bildudalur airport which is about one-hour drive from the hotel. Another option could be Europcar which has a branch in Patreksfjörður.
On the airport there are 4 car rental agency that can be found here: https://www.isavia.is/en/keflavik-airport/parking-and-transport/car-rental
Other car rental agencies in Iceland will also offer the service of bringing the rental car to the airport terminal. We recommend booking your rental car well in advance.
Driving to the Hotel
The drive to Hotel Latrabjarg from Keflavik airport will take about 6 hours plus stops.
We recommend putting “Hotel Latrabjarg” as the destination in your GPS driving guide in the rental car or on your mobile phone. You can also use this link with our direction in Google Maps.
From Keflavik airport you will start by driving in the direction of Reykjavik (on road 41) , then direction Borgarnes (road Nr. 1), then not too long after you have passed Borgarnes or the further University campus at Bifröst take a left on to road nr. 60, in direction to Búðardalur/Patreksfjörður.
You will drive via Búðardalur (it is good to stop there for restrooms and refreshments) and later turn left on to road 62 towards Patreksfjörður. When you come down at the bottom of the fjord Patreksfjörður you will take a left on to road 612 in direction to Latrabjarg and drive road 612 for about 26KM. Then you will come to a crossing and there turn right onto road nr. 615 in direction to Kollsvik and then the hotel will be on your left after about 3KM from the junction.
Flybus to Reykavik
Another option is to take a Fly Bus to Reykavik. Stay one or more nights in the Capital and use sightseeing tours from there. Then take a domestic flight from Reykjavik to Bildudalur with the airline Norlandair https://www.norlandair.is/en You can rent a car at Bildudalur airport here https://westfjordsadventures.com/car-rental/
See you soon at our hotel!
Although Latrabjarg is very beautiful during winter, summer months are better to see the Puffin, as the bulk of the Puffins stay in the cliffs from Mid May to Mid August.
The same things you would need to go birdwatching in any other country! Just make sure to pack some comfortable boots and winter-gear, as the top of the cliffs can get pretty windy.
Yes! We actually think this is the best way to travel around the beautiful Icelandic landscapes.
Some car rentals we recommend:
From Keflavik Airport
From Bildudalur Airport (Closest airport to Hotel Latrabjarg)

If you wish to visit during the warmest season, then summer (June, July and August) is your best option. During this time you can also find seasonal birds like the Puffins in the Latrabjarg cliffs. If you want to experience a magical side of Iceland, filled with Northern lights, then winter (September to February) is the best choice. Every season here is full of wonder and each has its own charm that will take your breath away.
As of the beginning of 2023, there is no Uber service in Iceland. This being a big island with widely spread cities, it is recommended to rent a car while you visit. If you do not feel like driving, there are other means of transportation available, such as taxis, buses and tours. In Reykjavik you can also find electric scooters from Hopp or Zolo.
